Description
Detailed biography of the gallery owner, collector and benefactor Alfred Gunzenhauser
The eventful life of gallery owner, art collector and museum founder Alfred Gunzenhauser (1926-2015) spanned almost a century. Growing up as the scion of a Swabian miller family in Heidenheim, Württemberg, he turned his early passion for art into a career after studying economics in the 1960s. Within a short space of time, he established himself as a gallery owner in his adopted home of Munich and became one of the defining figures in Munich's exclusive gallery mile, Maximilianstrasse. The fact that he was also expanding a top-class art collection at the same time initially remained hidden from many. It was only in the 1990s that he gradually ventured into the public eye, also in the hope of finding a permanent home for his 'life's work'. With many testimonies and previously unpublished sources, this richly illustrated biography traces Gunzenhauser's life and work up to the opening of his own museum in Chemnitz, Saxony, bringing a piece of German art, cultural and contemporary history to life.
