Catalog for the exhibition at the German Blade Museum Solingen.

Description

Catalog for the exhibition at the German Blade Museum in Solingen: "Steel and Magic. Blades of the Malay Archipelago" - December 01, 2019 - June 30, 2020

"Steel and Magic" describes 140 edged weapons (including 36 keris) from Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. The detailed entries were written by experts and range from one to four pages per item. They convey the manufacturing processes, cultural backgrounds, symbolic meanings, etc. of the pieces on display and are illustrated with high-quality photographs. Chapters on the history of Southeast Asian weapons and the magical-religious beliefs of the Malay Archipelago introduce the topic. Two large maps geographically locate the pieces presented, and a detailed bibliography rounds off the volume.

A must for all friends of Southeast Asian blade culture!

The texts, photos and lay-out all are of an excellent quality.
"Steel and Magic" is thus not only an essential reference work for devotees, collectors, museum professionals and dealers, but also a beautiful look-and-read book for aficionados of ethnographic art and of the history that comes with it.
Highly recommended!

- Albert van Zonneveld, author of "Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago"

"There are many marvelous items in it, and the text is as good as the items. [...] It has been most beautifully produced - many congratulations on a wonderful job. "
Tim D. Rogers, author of "An Annotated Bibliography of Indonesian, Filipino & Malay Edged Weapons"
