L'Italia in linee. Disegni di Christoph Heinrich Kniep

Master drawings by Christoph Heinrich Kniep (1755-1825)
The landscape artist Christoph Heinrich Kniep from Hildesheim began his career in Hamburg and Berlin, then traveled to Rome and finally to Naples, where he lived and worked for forty years until his death. He became known above all as Goethe's travel companion in Sicily in 1787, documenting the antiquities and landscapes there for the poet and remaining in correspondence with him even after Goethe's departure. In Naples, the artist worked for the local nobility and the travelers of the "Grand Tour", and his sepia drawings were universally praised. The Casa di Goethe Museum is taking the 200th anniversary of Kniep's death as an opportunity to present a comprehensive overview of the artist's work. The catalog offers a wide-ranging insight into Kniep's oeuvre, examines his position in the German artistic communities in Rome and Naples and provides an in-depth look at his relationship with Goethe.
