In Friendship, Love and Family. In Pictures of Romanticism, Herrmann Zschoche focuses on the depiction of human relationships in the art of the Romantic period. The works of this epoch broke away from social conventions and showed people as individuals.
Using well-known examples by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge and Wilhelm von Schadow, Zschoche examines how friendship and family found new forms of visual expression. In doing so, he sheds light on the different approaches and motifs underlying the paintings and provides an insight into the diversity and transformation of the depiction of interpersonal relationships in Romantic art.
